Tour of Windsor

After presenting and signing the memorandum of understanding with the town Dr. Schneider, Mayor Hoggard, town manager Allen Castelloe, town council member Cathy Wilson, and myself took a tour of the town and followed that with lunch at Bunn's Barbecue. The tour covered King Street and all the major tourist sites. We visited the Craftsman and Farmer's Museum. This museum contained numerous old tools, saddles, and a whole blacksmith section. Many of the tools were antiques that I have never come across before.

The next stop was walking by a statute commemorating the Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War. A little known secret is that the statue is actually a Union soldier because it cost less money and was more readily available.

Past the statue and down the street was St. Thomas Episcopal Church. The cemetery outside of the church contains several old graves, some are from before the civil war.

After the visit to the church we went and walked toward Bunn's Barbecue for lunch. On the way we stopped and saw an old school house that has been preserved.

Bunn's was great. It is well known for its barbecue as well as its famous East Carolina cornbread.

Board of Commissioners’ Meeting

Dr. Schneider and I went to Windsor on February 21st to present to the Board of Commissioners and to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Town of Windsor and East Carolina University.

Treehouse Consultation with Mr. Michael Garneir

Dr. Schneider, Mr. J. David Hodges II, Mr. Michael Reynolds of Challenge Towers, Mr. Michael Garneir of Out and About Treehouses and his team, and myself all met with Mayor Hoggard, the town council, Mr. John Sherron the Property Owner, G.T. Pittman, the Bertie County Building Inspectors, and Lee Cooper of Rustic River Furniture. Michael Garnier found several trees that are suitable for the project. The group then proceed to have more delicious east carolina oysters followed by a presentation by Michael Garneir

Teleconference on January 31st

Dr. Schneider, myself, and Mr. J. David Hodges II had a teleconference with Michael Garneir. Michael Garnier owns and runs a treehouse treesort in Oregon as well as being a consultant for contructing treehouses throughout the country. Michael Garneir decided he would travel to Windsor and help us find the right trees and help plan a tree house village near the Elm Street camp site.

First Trip to Windsor, NC

January 24th was my first visit to Windsor.  Dr. Schneider,  David Hodges, the EC scholars, and myself traveled together to Windsor and met with with Mayor Hoggard, the Town Manager Alan Castelloe, the Marketing Coordinator Mr. Smithwick, and town council member Cathy Wilson. After introducing ourselves and discussing the project we then proceeded to take a brief tour of the Elm Street Campground and the town before lunch. After the tour we then had steamed oysters and lunch with the council and community stakeholders at the Thompson Hunting Lodge. Everyone had a great time. I never knew that oysters could have small crabs inside them. After some convincing from David Hodges and others I finally tried one. I have to say it was pretty good!
